about

For a triple threat (Actor, Musician, Painter) independent creative artist like W. Ellington Felton, building a catalog of timely and timeless music are hallmarks of his craft.

While perpetually grinding as a father and performing as one half of the musical duo The CrossRhodes, his newest album Kings of the Wilderness (produced by Derek The Product Wilson of the Fresh Kids Music Group) reflects another element of his legacy as an artist, continuing the revolutionary tradition of working with the next generation of younger artists.

People who know Ellington’s music understand his sound is deeply rooted in representing the Washington DC area aka the DMV. Not only was he raised by jazz pianist & composer Hilton Felton, but a collective of iconic DMV poets and artists like Brother Askari, DJ Renegade, Kenny Carrol, Toni Blackmon and a young Ta-Nehisi Coates poured knowledge, rhythms and beats into Ellington’s musical soul.

When listening to Kings of the Wilderness, you are hearing blends of 3rd eye opening conscious lyrics of an OG, over mixes of new school beats.
The opening cut on the album, Romancing Wilderness, exemplifies the multidimensional layers of this project as Ellington rhymes about relationships, social media, selective morality of religion and growing up in the DMV over a head banging melodic beat. Given that the video for the song was shot in South Africa and the album was mixed in Ethiopia by DMV musician K Allyn, the younger artists involved in this project are getting both local and global exposure.

The cut which truly embodies Ellington’s reaching back with a sober message of hope, love and struggle to today’s youth is Stranger Fruit. Over a simple snare drum bass line and fender Rhodes piano loop, the lyrics cut deep into the contradiction laced realities young people face in today’s digital world. The video for this song, shot and produced by students as part of a class taught by Ellington, provided a hands on learning experience for potential future artists in actually making a music video with tools they can access starting with their imagination, without having a “record deal”.

Its these real world connections between art, music, and young people which make Kings of the Wilderness not only a dope record, but a blueprint for what artists who understand the power of the culture can do to ensure that future generations of artists have opportunities and know whose shoulders they are standing on.
